In the pages of this blog, we’ve talked about many delightful pairings that can be made with cigars; from chocolates and liquors, to beer, wine and even soft drinks. We’ve also touched on how cigars are traditionally symbols of success, lit and smoked to celebrate prosperity, good fortune or simply an expression of a life well lived.
So as the ultimate pairing, one that combines both complementary tastes, and symbols of celebration, may we recommend cigars and champagne.
You see, while a good scotch whisky or brandy go wonderfully with a fine cigar, the depths of rich, heavy flavors can leave the palate a little dehydrated. With its clean, crisp biscuity taste, and effervescence, the light tingle of bursting bubbles of champagne not only adds vibrancy to lingering tobacco flavors, it also cuts through, refreshing the smoker, and cleansing the palate. Special vintages should be reserved for heavier cigars, to create complimentary flavor complexity, while lighter cigars will work best with simpler bubbles that have a focus on finesse.
It’s an effect not limited to champagne. A prosecco or spumante, Italian classics, will also complement a celebratory cigar in fine fashion. And when the New Year rolls around, they’re a pairing enjoyed by discerning smokers throughout Tuscany, and beyond.
